Do you go to Church, Synagogue or Mosque and say prayers with the congregation?
Do those prayers mean anything to you or are you just repeating them over and over again, along with everyone else?
I studied a bit of Shakespeare at school and I used to go to Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford to see his plays. I didn't really understand them until one day I heard an actor who made Shakespeare's words come alive. He gave them a clear and definite meaning and then I understood.
Beside my bed I have a printout of Psalm 23 'The Lord is my Shepherd…….' Why I keep it there I am not sure, but every time I look at it I am reminded of being in the depths of depression and desperately searching the Internet for it and printing it out, even though I knew it off by heart. I began to say that psalm over and over, but it was not just a repetitive exercise. I said it slowly and gave it a really deep personal interpretation and as I did so I realised that I alone was responsible for making the words come alive - for me.
The strength I gained by doing this, when at such a weak and precarious stage, made me really appreciate and think about the true meaning of the words.
You and I alone empower the words and give them our meaning.
When you click on my free gifts and you read a story or some verse, my advice to you is not to flick through them all and see how fast you can get to the end.
Not to say to yourself 'Oh, yes, well I can see the meaning in that one ……'
Not to dismiss the writing as being somehow weak - for it is not.
The words you read can be just as powerful as you make them and so you gain their strength. They were written for people just like you and I, to bring us that strength, comfort, solace and realisation that none of us stand alone in our hour of need.
